Naoki Katsuya (勝矢 直樹, Katsuya Naoki) is a supporting character in Yakuza 5. He is the chief of headquarters of the Omi Alliance, the president of Osaka Talent, and the chairman of Ousaka Enterprises.

Profile[]

Appearance[]

Katsuya is of above-average height and has impressive musculature. He has a small mustache and slicked-back hair.

Tattoo[]

Crane

Katsuya has the tattoo of a red-crowned crane flying above a cloud. While it is not a common tattoo, the crane itself symbolizes grace, wisdom, peace and love of life, representative of Katsuya's personal qualities.

Attire[]

Katsuya wears a pinstriped navy blue suit over white shirt, a tie, a pair of navy blue suit pants, and a pair of tan leather shoes.

Personality[]

When you work in the entertainment industry, the face is all-important. An idol is just an illusion. The fans don't care what's inside. All they see is the face.

— Naoki Katsuya

Katsuya is a calm and collected person. He prefers reason to violence, making him the opposite of his subordinate, Kanai, whom he chastises for his brutishness. Upon closer inspection, however, he is seemingly a cynical man, telling Haruka that as an idol, what's inside does not matter - only the 'face', or what fans see, is important, as if to imply that Katsuya sees people as largely superficial and concerned with style over substance. His cynicism appears to extend to his ways of dealing with others; just because he is averse to senseless violence does not mean Katsuya is above making threats to get what he wants, as shown by his phone call to Haruka where he imperils Morning Glory Orphanage.

That said, there is more to Katsuya than meets the eye. Beneath his cold demeanor lies a highly loyal and trustworthy friend. He demonstrates this by willingly taking a bullet intended for Watase. His wider intentions were also secretly noble, as he wanted to keep Haruka safe all along; he attempts to postpone her concert to prevent anything bad happening to her, and eventually teams up with Daigo to foil his own boss's schemes.

Background[]

Katsuya used to be an action film actor when he was younger. Around 1992, he suffered a terrible injury while performing a stunt and was forced to retire. At some point, he met Goro Majima and Mirei Park and the three of them became friends. While Park and Majima split off from each other, Katsuya continued to work with both of them. Through Majima's help, Katsuya got situated with the Omi Alliance, and he founded Osaka Talent as a front for his yakuza business. Soon after, Park followed Katsuya to Sotenbori, establishing her own talent agency, Dyna Chair.

Involvement[]

Yakuza 5: 2012[]

Katsuya is visited by Shun Akiyama to discuss the death of Mirei Park. Katsuya says that he has nothing to do with it, which Akiyama doubts. Katsuya then writes a check for 10 million for Akiyama in order to convince him to leave.

He later arrives to save Haruka Sawamura after she was kidnapped by his right-hand man, Kamon Kanai, and return her back to Dyna Chair. Eventually Katsuya makes a secret phone call to Haruka for her to deliver the letter to him in person alone, threatening to harm Morning Glory Orphanage if she didn't comply, while in truth he wanted to get the letter before Kanai could while ensuring her safety. However, Kanai acts before Katsuya can reach Haruka and surrounds her along with his men at the Shin-Osaka Station. Akiyama manages to save her and Katsuya punishes Kanai at his office for his actions.

He knows that something bad will happen to Haruka during her performance at the Tokyo Dome and talks with the event organizers in order to postpone the concert. He later calls in Akiyama and offers him 300 million so that T-Set will replace Haruka at the Tokyo Dome, which Akiyama refuses. However, Katsuya pays off the money himself and manages to have Haruka's concert postponed, leading Tojo Clan legends Kazuma Kiryu and Taiga Saejima, as well as Katsuya's colleague and Omi Captain Masaru Watase, to storm Kamurocho Hills to confront him. Katsuya states that his proposal is that the four of them fight each other in order to lure out the mastermind of the plot into the open. After Kiryu defeats Watase, Saejima defeats Katsuya, followed by Kiryu and Saejima having a fight which is interrupted by the appearance of the mastermind - none other than the Seventh Chairman of the Omi Alliance, Tsubasa Kurosawa. When Kurosawa attempts to execute Watase, Katsuya takes the bullet for him, calling him his Aniki and stating that the Eighth Chairman of the Omi Alliance should be him.

Later, he and Daigo Dojima appear atop the Millennium Tower to save Saejima and Majima from Kurosawa and ultimately foil Kurosawa's schemes.

It is unknown what becomes of Katsuya and Ousaka Enterprises afterward.

Fighting Style[]

Katsuya is a basic, but elegant fighter, who uses a rudimentary form of Muay Thai combined with Taekwondo. His moveset utilizes practical, non-flashy attacks with an emphasis on kicking, but very little of the grappling or clinching signature to the former of the aforementioned martial arts.

He has a total of six different combos, which are listed below:

  • one combo consisting of a right shin-kick and a left hook,
  • a second combo made up of a right shin-kick and a right calf-kick,
  • a left jab-right cross combo,
  • a left jab-right roundhouse kick combo,
  • a combo made up of a right shin-kick, a left roundhouse kick, and a left hook; and
  • another combo comprised of a left roundhouse kick and an overhand right command grab, followed by a left shovel hook-right shovel hook-spinning right heel kick-right tornado crescent kick.

The rest of his moveset consists of:

  • a hopping right knee strike,
  • a flying dropkick,
  • a spinning right/left roundhouse kick after quickstepping right/left respectively, which can stun Saejima;
  • a command grab where he knees Saejima in the stomach and the face,
  • a low right roundhouse kick as a downed attack, and
  • a taunt where he claps his right fist and finger beckons Saejima with his right hand.

Upon entering Heat Mode, Katsuya starts to extend his combos with Finishing Blows. These include:

  • a right hook finisher for his low right kick-left haymaker combo,
  • a right foot sweep-kick finisher for his double-low kick combo,
  • a right uppercut finisher for his jab-cross combo,
  • a left downward roundhouse kick finisher for his jab-roundhouse kick combo, and
  • a right Thai roundhouse kick finisher for his low kick-roundhouse kick-hook combo.

His aura is a mixture of royal blue and indigo with small bursts of lightning, in contrast to Watase's flaming orange aura.

Katsuya's moveset is reused by a Bed of Styx coliseum opponent, Dr. Kirihito, in Yakuza 0, as well as Kengo in Judgment.
