Jun Oda (尾田 純, Oda Jun), also known as Wei Tian (尾田, Wèi Tiān), is a major antagonist in Yakuza 0. He is an employee of Tachibana Real Estate.

Profile

Appearance

Oda is a tall man, being slightly taller than Kiryu in height. It can be assumed that his build is similar to Tachibana's in muscle and size. Oda has dark brown hair with a middle part and it is long enough to nearly reach his shoulders. He has a faint moustache.

Tattoo

Oda has a tattoo on his left forearm, depicting a green bat with brown, rounded wings and open talons, engulfed in orange flame.

Attire

Oda wears a yellow, orange, and brown patterned dress shirt, a beige pinstripe blazer with a red pocket square in a "Two Peaks" fold, a red leather belt with a gold buckle, white slacks and a pair of oxblood smooth toe oxfords. His outfit is a recolor of Christina's. He also has pentagon shaped diamond earrings.

Personality

Oda is flippant and, on the face of things, quite easy-going. He frequently banters with and makes irreverent remarks to Kiryu, addressing him casually and pointing out his relative unfamiliarity with civilian living. Compared to Tachibana, he does not carry himself in a particularly business-like manner except when dealing with clients, and even then, he lacks his boss's tact. That said, Oda is not sloppy on the job, being partially responsible for the rapid rise of Tachibana Real Estate in the 1980s, which earned him Tachibana's trust.

This somewhat laid-back attitude is complicated by his capacity to deal violence. In his past life, he did so in order to survive, but even as a real estate agent, he is not above strong-arming people into complying with his demands. It is also complicated by his deep respect for Tachibana, with Oda constantly speaking highly of him and being deferent in his presence. This was due to him being impressed by Tachibana's strength, implying that he values leadership and integrity. Ironically, Oda lacks integrity - he is a coward when it comes to his past sins, going as far as selling out his friends in order to conceal the horrific acts he previously committed. It appears his respect for Tachibana did not extend to honesty, nor absolute loyalty.

Background

SPOILER WARNING: Plot details for Yakuza 0 follow. (Skip)

Around 1983, Oda borrowed money from Chinese mafia to migrate to Japan on a stowaway trip. Arriving at Sotenbori, he committed any crime, such as armed robbery and selling girls to sex traffickers, to make a living. One of the girls he sold was Makoto Makimura, whom he found on the streets and sold to a Korean syndicate, where she was caged and sexually abused.

Oda also formed a small gang where members would don a bat tattoo on their arms. Around 1986, he met Tetsu Tachibana. Oda was impressed by Tachibana's fighting prowess and as a result, elected him as the new leader. After Tachibana lost his arm whilst fighting, Oda vowed to never betray him. He learned that Makoto is Tachibana's sister while watching a documentary on Chinese war orphans. Fearing Tachibana's reprisal, Oda did whatever it took to conceal the horrific secret.

Around mid-1987, Oda and Tachibana relocated to Kamurocho.

Involvement

Yakuza 0: 1988

Oda's first appearance is at the Namase Bar looking to pay the owner of the bar compensation for him to leave the premises. It is then that he meets Kiryu—whom attempts to prevent him from further stalling the business—and a noticeable tension is already formed. After he tosses the money towards Namase believing that he has already swayed him into leaving the building, Oda exits and declares that Kiryu's 'hero fetish' would eventually end up in his demise.

The two once again cross paths in a Champion District lot after Kiryu has very clearly defeated a group of residents of said district. When he states that he had been scouted by Tetsu Tachibana himself in hopes to join Tachibana Real Estate, Oda became incredibly skeptical and elected to call the man in question as to his intentions behind hiring the 'ex-yakuza'. After a seemingly brief conversation with Tachibana, he states that Kiryu should hurry along and go to meet with his boss at once; walking away as he makes this suggestion. In reality, he returns to the Real Estate building to test Kiryu's resolve and see if he is really capable in joining their firm.

After having Kiryu assist their new client Yamanoi, Oda seeks to discuss details further with Kiryu at a bar, and introduces him to Serena. On the way, however, he is assaulted by the Taihei Association to learn Kiryu's location, which Oda gives up after a thorough beating. Kiryu defeats the Taihei, after which Reina tends to Oda's wounds and he decides to distance himself from Kiryu for the time being due to the kind of people after him.

Oda Makoto-0

Eventually it is discovered that Makoto Makimura is the owner of the Empty Lot, and they travel to Sotenbori to get her. They go to Camilla Grove and Oda waits outside while Kiryu gets her from Masaru Sera. Upon Makoto and Oda's “first encounter” it is apparent they both seem to recognize each other almost immediately. He asks her in the car if he has done something to offend her, to which she does not respond to. As they are driving on the highway back to Kamurocho, they are ambushed by Keiji Shibusawa and his men, and the driver is shot. Oda takes the wheel while Kiryu holds them off.

After that, they eventually pull off the highway and stop at a construction site, where Oda puts the driver's dead body in the trunk. Inside the construction site, they come to have a moment's rest, where Oda, seemingly frustrated by the situation attempts to slap Makoto, but is stopped by Kiryu. Still annoyed, he “exits" to check the area, leaving Kiryu and Makoto alone. Makoto then tells Kiryu that she knows Oda, to which he is very confused. Almost immediately after, Oda is revealed to have been listening to the conversation and points a gun at Kiryu and Makoto. He approaches, grabs Makoto, and points the gun at Kiryu. Makoto pulls a small blade from her walking stick, and stabs Oda in the leg, immobilizing him. Kiryu then takes this chance to charge at him, gets the gun and points it at Oda. Makoto asks Kiryu to see if he has a bat tattoo, which he does. Kiryu then asks Oda to explain everything.

Tachibana and Oda
Oda-01

Moments before his death.

After recounting his story, Oda decided to redeem himself by using himself as a shield so that Kiryu and Makoto could get away from Shibusawa's men. He also tells Kiryu to tell Tachibana that he really loved him. Oda holds off some of the attackers but is shot repeatedly. Before his death, it is revealed that Oda was a mole for Shibusawa the entire time, presumably out of the desire to get rid of Makoto, thus removing his guilty conscience. However, Oda saw how hurtful his actions were and quickly terminated his cooperation with Shibusawa. Shibusawa asks Oda if he knows where Makoto is. Oda says he doesn't know anymore and mocks him for being beaten by Sera and not seizing the opportunity to catch Makoto earlier when they were in Sotenbori. Offended by the remark, Shibusawa tells Oda that capturing Makoto in Sotenbori was Homare Nishitani's job and that he wasn't the only underling that failed him. Afterwards, he executes Oda with a gun.

Fighting Style

Oda proves to be proficient in Okinawan Kobudo, making use of a tonfa during his boss fight. He attacks mostly with telegraphed but powerful swing and thrusts. His moveset is comprised of:

  • a Rush Combo consisting of a leftward swing, a knife throw, an underarm thrust, a downward diagonal left swing, and a downward diagonal right;
  • a horizontal tonfa twirl, followed by his latter three Rush Combo attacks;
  • a second combo consisting of a a leftward swing, an upward vertical back swing, a downward vertical back swing, and a leftward swing;
  • a spinning rightward swing,
  • an upward vertical swing,
  • a hopping left side kick,
  • an upward knockback-downward diagonal left swing as a guard reversal (Heat Mode only),
  • catching himself and throwing a running right haymaker as a knockdown reversal,
  • twirling his tonfa before gripping it by the body, followed by a leaping downward swing that can stun Kiryu;
  • twirling his tonfa before gripping it by the body, followed by a downward diagonal right swing, and performing a command grab where hooks Kiryu by the grip and throws him to the floor if the attack lands;
  • a downward tonfa thrust as a downed attack, and
  • a taunt where he drops his stance and flourishes his tonfa.

His Heat Mode aura is blue, and emanates small, white bursts of lightning.

If by chance the player fails the QTE in Chapter 5 at Cafe Alps, Oda will slap Kiryu on the back of the head. He attempts to do it again, but Kiryu blocks him the second time.

As an AI partner, he uses Daigo Dojima's moveset.

Trivia

  • In Yakuza Kiwami, Oda is briefly referenced in the substory Bad Ass Dads. If Kiryu answers the first question with "My clothes", he will be reminded of the time Oda reprimanded him for his choice of a white pinstriped suit.
